(Webinar) The GIS Certification Institute (GISCI) and its value within the geospatial community

Summary:  The certification program was created to establish GIS as a profession, provide a means for attaining recognition by allied professions and colleagues that the GIS professional has demonstrated professional competence and integrity in the field, encourage long-term professional development that will help existing professionals maintain currency in GIS technology and methods, ensure ethical behavior by members of the profession and provide a basis for judging the validity of allegations or complaints against GIS practitioners, assist prospective employers assess and hire GIS professionals, ensure that those who produce geographic information have a core competency of knowledge, and assist aspiring GIS professionals choose their educational opportunities wisely (gisci.org). This presentation explains the process for technicians to start the process of becoming a GIS Professional.

I will discuss this process within the context of the revision of the GTCM, and review how the update might impact GIS professionals going forward.
